Step-by-Step Guide to Request Academic Reasonable Accommodations
Step 1 - Register with the Accessibility Resources Center
Register with the Accessibility Resources Center by requesting and completing the . The Disability Verification Form is available to assist you with providing appropriate documentation. For more information on required documentation, please go to the Documentation Guidelines. For all forms and information requests, please go to the Student Accessibility Forms page.
For requests and additional information, please email the Acessibility Resources Center at ARC@newhaven.edu.
While Student Information Forms and documentation are accepted at any time, New Students should submit this information no later than August 1 to ensure enough time to determine the student's eligibility and to conduct a Welcome Appointment to determine appropriate reasonable accommodations in a timely manner.
Students entering the university for the Spring semester should submit information forms and documentation as soon as they make a decision to attend the university to ensure that accommodations can be provided in a timely manner.
Documentation will be reviewed to determine the student鈥檚 eligibility for reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act Amendments Act and/or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Subpart E.
Step 2 - Meet with an Accessibility Resources Center staff member to complete a Welcome Interview.
Welcome interviews are offered both in the summer (between June 1 and July 15) and at the start of school. Students needing specialized services such as alternate format textbooks, ASL interpreters/captioning, closed captioning, notetakers, FM Systems or other auxiliary support services should schedule appointments in the summer to enable the university to mobilize appropriate resources and assure the timeliness of the provision of accommodation. The Student Information Form and appropriate Documentation must be received and reviewed before an appointment can be scheduled.
Step 3 - Register for and Attend D.R.E.A.M. Program
Registered students are strongly encouraged to participate in the D.R.E.A.M. Transition Program program where they will learn the significant differences between their responsibilities as a student with a disability in high school versus being a student with a disability in college. They will be informed about services and resources available to make their transition from high school to the university community a smooth process. And, they will be connected with their peers and upperclassmen students who are ready to support and advise our newest members of the university community.
Students attending the D.R.E.A.M. Transition Program who have not already completed a Welcome Interview will be scheduled for a Welcome Interview to complete required paperwork and discuss the reasonable accommodations they are eligible to receive at the postsecondary level.
Students who have not completed a Welcome Interview over the summer and who cannot attend D.R.E.A.M. program should make an appointment to meet with an Accessibility Resources Center staff member for an interview at the start of the semester.
