Financial Aid Programs for Undergraduate Students

Our list may look a bit overwhelming, but you deserve an overview of the major kinds of financial aid available. Federal Grant Programs

  • Federal Pell Grant

    The Pell Grant Program is a need based federal program providing grant assistance to low-income students. Students must complete and submit the FAFSA form each year to have their eligibility determined for this federal grant. Based on the results of the FAFSA, students may also need to submit additional information to the Financial Aid Office. For more information regarding the application process, click here.

    Grants for the 2025-2026 academic year range from $740 to $7,395 with the student's eligibility being determined by the U.S. Department of Education. Students must also meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the university each year to be eligible for this federal grant.

    For Pell Grant recipients, the University of New Haven has 7 days to issue a refund of a credit balance at the start of a term in order to assist with the purchasing of books and supplies. If a Pell Grant recipient does not wish to be refunded within 7 days, the refund will be processed under the standard refund policy.   • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

    SEOG is a need based federal program that provides additional grant assistance to Pell eligible students. Students are selected by the University to receive this grant, however SEOG funds are limited, so not all eligible students receive this grant.

    Students must complete and submit the FAFSA each year to have their eligibility determined for this federal grant. Based on the results of the FAFSA, students may also need to submit additional information to the Financial Aid Office. For more information regarding the application process, click here.

    Students must be enrolled at least half-time to be considered for this grant. Students must also meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the university each year to be eligible for this federal grant.


Connecticut State Grant Programs

  • Roberta B. Willis Scholarship Grant Program

    A need based program for Connecticut residents matriculated in an undergraduate degree program. Priority for this grant is given to full-time students. Students must complete and submit the FAFSA form each year for this state grant, as eligibility is based on the SAI (formerly EFC). Based on the results of the FAFSA, students may also need to submit additional information to the Financial Aid Office. For more information regarding the application process, click here.

    The annual grant amounts are set each year by the . Students must also meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the university each year to be eligible for this state grant.

  • Roberta B. Willis Scholarship Program

    Students must complete and submit the FAFSA as the Student Aid Index (SAI) (formerly EFC) is used by the State of Connecticut Office of Higher Education to determine a student鈥檚 eligibility for this state grant program.

    Additionally, students must have finished in the top 20 percent of their junior year high school class, or are college undergraduates who ranked in the top 20th percentile of their senior year class and/or have scored 1200 or higher on their combined Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores or have an ACT of 25 or higher, and must be enrolled at least half-time in their first undergraduate program.

    Students should contact their high school guidance office or visit for more information. Eligible students may receive up to $5,250 for the year. Students must also meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the university each year to be eligible for this state grant.


University Grant Programs

  • University Grant-in-Aid

    Students must complete and submit the FAFSA each year for the University to determine a student鈥檚 eligibility for this grant. Based on the results of the FAFSA, students may also need to submit additional information to the Financial Aid Office. For more information regarding the application process, click here.

    四色AV Grant-in-Aid is awarded to full-time, matriculated undergraduate students. 四色AV selects the recipients of this grant on the basis of need as determined by the FAFSA.

  • Athletic Grant-in-Aid

    Athletic grants are non-need based grants provided to students for participation in sports, with recipient selection made by the Athletic Department based on students' athletic ability. Awards can range up to a full scholarship (tuition, housing, and food). Athletic grants are available in the following sports:

Federal Loan Programs

  • Federal Direct Student Loans

    Federal Direct Student Loans are low interest rate federal loans made to undergraduate students attending accredited colleges and universities. There are two types of Federal Direct Student Loans: Subsidized and Unsubsidized. The Federal Direct Student Loans are loans the student borrows and they must be repaid. New loan borrowers are required to complete entrance loan counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note prior to receiving their first disbursement.

    The amount a student may borrow each year from the Federal Direct Student Loan Program is limited based on the student鈥檚 grade level. For more information about Federal Direct Student Loans and amounts students can borrow, visit our Federal Direct Student Loan web page.

    The Subsidized Direct Student Loan - Students must complete and submit the FAFSA each year to have their eligibility determined for this federal loan. Based on the results of the FAFSA, students may also need to submit additional information to the Financial Aid Office. For more information regarding the application process, click here.

    Eligibility for this loan program is determined on the basis of need, by the results of the FAFSA. Students must be enrolled at least half-time for this federal loan program. For students who are eligible for a subsidized loan, the U.S. Department of Education pays the interest while you're enrolled at least half-time, and during other specified periods. Students must also meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the university each year to be eligible for this federal loan.

    The Unsubsidized Direct Student Loan - Students must complete and submit the FAFSA each year to have their eligibility determined for this federal loan. Based on the results of the FAFSA, students may also need to submit additional information to the Financial Aid Office. For more information regarding the application process, click here. Although students must complete the FAFSA, this loan program does not require a student to have financial need.

    The U.S. Department of Education does not pay interest on this loan. The interest rate is fixed and the interest will start accruing on the date of your first disbursement. Students have the option to pay the interest while in school.

    Students must be enrolled at least half-time for this federal loan program. Students must also meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the university each year to be eligible for this federal loan.

  • The Federal Direct Parent Loan (PLUS)

    Students must complete and submit the FAFSA each year before a parent鈥檚 eligibility can be determined for the Federal Direct Parent Loan. Based on the results of the FAFSA, students may also need to submit additional information to the Financial Aid Office. For more information regarding the application process, click here.

    The PLUS Loan is a financing option a parent of a dependent undergraduate student may consider. Students must be enrolled in school at least half-time and students must also meet the satisfactory academic progress requirements of the university each year for a parent to be considered for this federal loan program.

    The interest rate on a PLUS Loan is fixed. Parents who do not have adverse credit histories and who meet the eligibility requirements of this loan program may borrow up to the annual total cost of education less other financial aid received. University Scholarships

  • Merit Scholarships

    Students are automatically considered for University Merit Awards when they apply for full-time undergraduate admission. More information regarding these scholarships and the process can be found on our Merit Scholarships web page.


Student Employment

  • Federal Work Study

    Federal Work Study is a program where a student works in a part-time job while enrolled, to earn the amount offered. Students must complete and submit the FAFSA form each year to have their eligibility determined for this federal program. Based on the results of the FAFSA, students may also need to submit additional information to the Financial Aid Office. For more information regarding the application process, click here.

    To be eligible for Federal Work Study, students must demonstrate financial need as determined by their FAFSA. Students are selected by the University to receive Federal Work Study, however these funds are limited, so not all eligible students are offered Federal Work Study. Students must meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the university each year to be eligible for this federal program.   • Non-Federal Work Study

    This is a program offered by the University where a student works in a part-time position to earn money while enrolled. Individual offices and departments determine the position(s) they have available. Students can view open positions and apply for them through the University鈥檚 career system.
